Victory Lane Karting League

VLK’s new winter Adult and Youth Leagues have just started up. The leagues are a great way to get better at karting. In our adult league we have three classes to choose from. There is Novice, Heavyweight and Lightweight. Something for all levels of talent to choose from. Our Adult league last for 8 weeks on Monday evenings and is a point system. Winner of your division at the end of 8 weeks will get the entire next league FREE! On our Youth League side of things, it is a 6 week League and is held on Saturday mornings. September 11 Memorial

This is obviously not the most timely post for a blog but a couple months don’t matter for such an event. I was on one of the first Jet Blue flights out of Long Beach, CA to JFK days after the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center. The flight was almost empty and I was the only customer on the Avis bus from the airport.
After my first day of sales calls, I went to ground zero with a friend and walked some of the perimeter of chain link fence that was serving as a barrier and also as a makeshift memorial for thousands who posted grief stricken messages and personal items. I had never witnessed NYC quiet, I was uncomfortable, recovery work was still underway, the work stopped to remove remains, I felt like an intruder. I snapped this image that caught my attention and that I shared with family on my return to Los Angeles.

Warm Cookies

A couple weeks ago Heather Fitch, the owner of Host of Charlotte introduced us to Michelle with Otis Spunkmeyer. Tough negotiators that we are, we folded like a cheap suit and made a purchase 2.5 seconds after she said “Hi guys, Ya wanna buy some cookies?” and VLK is now in the cookie business. Sooooo…come on people, we got these really good fresh baked cookies that are available on the front counter. It also made me remember a great book by Robert Fulghum I read about 20 years ago and one of the things he learned in kindergarten. WARM COOKIES AND COLD MILK ARE GOOD FOR YOU. If you did not read the book, the important part is posted below.

ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW I LEARNED IN KINDERGARTEN

All I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned in
kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sand pile at school.

These are the things I learned:

Share everything.
Play fair.
Don’t hit people.
Put things back where you found them.
Clean up your own mess.
Don’t take things that aren’t yours.
Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Flush.
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
Live a balanced life – learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.
Take a nap every afternoon.
When you go out in the world, watch out
for traffic, hold hands and stick together.
Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: the roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.
Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup – they all die. So do we.
And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned - the biggest word of all – LOOK.

Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic
sanitation. Ecology and politics and equality and sane living.

Take any one of those items and extrapolate it into sophisticated adult terms and apply it
to your family life or your work or government or your world and it holds true
and clear and firm. Think what a better world it would be if we all – the whole
world – had cookies and milk at about 3 o’clock in the afternoon and then lay
down with our blankies for a nap. And it is still true, no matter how old you
are, when you go out in the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.

I would only add that a little exercise in the form of kart racing is a good way to add a
little balance to your life.

Rubbins Racin?

Yes, VLK is known for ‘letting people race’, we love our customers, love racing and allow a little rubbin.
We had a booth at East Lincoln Speedway on Saturday night, June 4 to sponsor and support Evan York racing in the new US Legends Modified Dirt car. The announcer walked over with his microphone and asked ‘do you allow bumpin at VLK’? The entire racetrack fell quiet… OK it did not fall quiet, but Fred and Joe looked at me and Y’all know my reputation for being the rules jerk, I answered ‘we allow a little rubbing.’ I should have said, if you leave your Visa card at the front desk, you can drive on the walls and the roof. Seriously folks, what we really enforce at VLK is not a whole lot of rules but instead a social contract of sorts that we feel protects and encourages all to feel comfortable racing here regardless of your racing ability.
A large part of our social contract involves what Darrell Waltrip calls coopetition. One element of coopetition is “give and take”. If you watch our racing league on most any Monday night, you will see how this social contract works, not flawlessly but close.
If you are from Rio Linda, California and have trouble with the definition and practice of rubbin, my track officials are on hand to explain and enforce.

First Timer? Brake Sooner

Two words of advice to the first timer, that if heeded will make you instantly competent at negotiating an indoor kart track. BRAKE SOONER. Thousands of details, bits of advice and hours of seat time later and you will find yourself enjoying a sport that rivals any other in the thrill of competition, complexity, physical demands, hand eye coordination, depth perception and mental focus. At it’s most competitive levels you encounter athletes with superior strength, agility and endurance that are every bit as conditioned as most NASCAR Cup drivers.
If it is your first time on the track just BRAKE SOONER and then come back and work on the fun details.

Welcome to our Victory Lane Indoor Karting blog. At this point I will attempt to explain how we will run this beast.
• We hope to discuss whatever we determine is compelling and engaging to the reader
• Rants are great for starting discussion and causing a little controversy, so we might get a little passionate, say what’s on our mind and tell it like it is. We will attempt to avoid saying things we later regret.
• We will find some interesting personalities in karting and present them to you.
• Occasionally we will just pass on information on a topic.
• Maybe tell a few success stories or try to point out ‘what could be’.
